GONG XI FA CAI
Singapore celebrates the chinese New Year with symbolic bashes in Chinatown. Of all the chinese festivals, the lunar year is the most important and elaborate. It is a time when families and friends united and business relations are fortified.

Taken in Chinatown, Singapore. we had fun strolling around chinatown
Year of the Dog
The lunar Calendar repeats every 12 years and an animal represents each year. 2006 is the year of the dog and those who are born under this zodiac sign are regarded as loyal and honest yet eccentric.
Traditionally, the zodiac sign carries much weight in determining the success of marriage. For ex. a couple whose zodiac signs are tiger and rabbit are considered doomed for one is surely to overpower the other.
New Year Traditions
Although Singapore is a modern city where many chinese people practise non-Chinese religions, New Year traditions are steadfast. In the days leading up to the new year, houses are cleaned thoroughly, debts are paid, hair trimmed and new clothes bought. Couplets-short classical Chinese poems that express good wishes for the family in the coming year - are inked on red paper and pasted on walls and doors.

Like this "Fu" which means luck. Chinese character is deliberately place upside down to infer the arrival of good luck
The Reunion Dinner- On the eve of the New Year, houses are lit brightly and a family reunion dinner is served, two popular dishes are served, steamboat and yu sheng. Steamboat dish consists of a pot of simmering broth where diners throw in side ingredients such fish ball and maw, sliced meat & vegetables.usually served on a round table with the steamboat pot, symbolising a double circle of strength and unity.
Raw fish salad - This is a salad of sliced raw fish and vegetables seasoned with plum sauce, the feast of Yu sheng. "Yu" means fish but it also sounds like another word that means abundance.
On chinese New Year's day, everyone puts on new clothes and their best behaviours. It is considered improper to tell a lie, raise one's voice, use indecent language or break anything on this day. Sweeping or dusting are taboo for fear that good fortune will be swept away. And every gesture carries symbolic meaning. During this time, chinese share auspicious foods such as mandarin oranges, pineapple tarts, candies and nian gao. Say Gong Xi Fa Cai (may everyone prosper) to a chinese and you will be showered with a smiles and warm greetings..
